The US has had a rocky experience with public restrooms. In the early 1900s many cities installed public restrooms only to find that they were not being maintained and/or used for illicit purposes, only to shut them down in the second half of the 1990s. The dawn of the 21st Century has brought a resurgence in interest in installing clean, safe public restrooms, influenced in large part by the emergence of standalone restroom models that have built into them safety features and adequate maintenance. Challenges, nevertheless, remain.
